About the The Expendables saga
'The Expendables' is the series with which Sylvester Stallone set out to bring together in one film the great action stars of the eighties and nineties alongside the genre's new heroes. Stallone co-wrote, directed and starred in 'The Expendables' (2010) as Barney Ross, leader of a band of mercenaries, with Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke, plus a cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.
The idea worked, and Simon West's 'The Expendables 2' (2012) widened the cast with Jean-Claude Van Damme as the villain and Chuck Norris, while Schwarzenegger and Willis joined the action. Patrick Hughes' 'The Expendables 3' (2014) added Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford and Antonio Banderas.
Statham took over as lead in 'Expend4bles' (2023), directed by Scott Waugh, with Megan Fox and 50 Cent joining and Stallone in a smaller role. They are four films that work as a tribute to, and a reunion of, action cinema's veterans.
