Biography

Few life stories pack so much into one: beauty queen, soldier, law student and the most famous Wonder Woman on the planet. Gal Gadot was born in Petah Tikva, Israel, on 30 April 1985 and grew up in nearby Rosh HaAyin, in an Ashkenazi Jewish family shaped by memory: her maternal grandfather survived Auschwitz. Her first name, Gal, means "wave" in Hebrew, and her life has lived up to the swell. In 2004, still a teenager, she won Miss Israel and represented her country at Miss Universe, though posing was never really her thing; she has admitted she did everything possible not to win the international crown, turning up late and unenthusiastic to the events: she went on to complete two years of military service as a combat fitness instructor, a discipline she has always credited as the foundation of her work ethic, and started a law degree before cinema crossed her path.

From Miss Israel to the Fast & Furious family

Her first big audition was for a Bond girl in 'Quantum of Solace': she missed out on the part, but the tryout so impressed the casting team that it opened Hollywood's door. In 2009 she won the role of the mercenary Gisele in 'Fast & Furious', after debuting at home with the series 'Bubot'. Her military past convinced the producers she could handle her own stunts, and the character grew alongside those of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in 'Fast Five' (2011) until her sacrifice in 'Fast & Furious 6' (2013). Fans loved her so much that the saga resurrected her by surprise a decade later in 'Fast X' (2023), a comeback celebrated as one of its most applauded twists.

In those years she also popped up in 'Knight and Day' (2010), alongside Tom Cruise, and in the comedy 'Date Night' (2010), while back in Israel she became a first rank television and advertising face. Just before her great leap she also lined up the thrillers 'Triple 9' (2016) and 'Criminal' (2016) and the spy comedy 'Keeping Up with the Joneses' (2016).

Wonder Woman, the role of a generation

Her life changed in December 2013, when Zack Snyder chose her as Diana of Themyscira after a secretive audition process in which she did not even know which part she was testing for. She introduced herself by stealing scenes in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016) and a year later made history: 'Wonder Woman' (2017), directed by Patty Jenkins, passed 800 million dollars, broke records for a film directed by a woman and turned her bracelet crossing in No Man's Land, beside Chris Pine's Steve Trevor, into a superhero cinema icon. She shot some of the reshoots five months pregnant, with green cloth over her bump for the effects team to erase.

She wore the armour again with Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck in 'Justice League' (2017) and in the celebrated cut of 'Zack Snyder's Justice League' (2021), and led the eighties set sequel 'Wonder Woman 1984' (2020), which she also produced and which the pandemic pushed into a simultaneous HBO Max release. The third instalment was cancelled in 2022 amid DC's change of course, though she still managed to bid Diana farewell with cameos in 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' (2023) and 'The Flash' (2023).

Queen of Netflix and Disney villain

Out of the cape, she has made streaming her stronghold. 'Red Notice' (2021), with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, became the most watched film in Netflix history up to then, and 'Heart of Stone' (2023), which she produced through her Pilot Wave banner alongside Jamie Dornan and the Indian star Alia Bhatt, topped the platform's global chart, conceived as the launch of her own spy franchise. Forbes has placed her among the world's best paid actresses several years running, while her long cherished Cleopatra biopic remains in development limbo.

In between she was the murdered heiress Linnet Ridgeway of 'Death on the Nile' (2022), directed by Kenneth Branagh, voiced the racer Shank in 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' (2018) and was named by Time magazine among the hundred most influential people in the world in 2018.

In 2025 she dared to play her first great villain: the Evil Queen of 'Snow White', opposite Rachel Zegler's heroine, in a delayed release engulfed in debates over casting and its stars' statements, which ended up falling well short of Disney's box office expectations. She made up for it at the Venice Film Festival with 'In the Hand of Dante' (2025), by the prestigious Julian Schnabel, alongside Oscar Isaac.

Jaron, four daughters and an almighty scare

Her other half for two decades has been the Israeli businessman Jaron Varsano, whom she met at a desert retreat in 2006 and married in 2008; today he is her producing partner at Pilot Wave, which the couple run together. They have four daughters: Alma (2011), Maya (2017), Daniella (2021) and Ori, born in March 2024 in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable.

Because at the end of that year, Gadot revealed that in her eighth month of pregnancy doctors had found a massive blood clot in her brain, a cerebral venous thrombosis that required emergency surgery; Ori came into the world during the operation. "All I wanted was to hold on and live", she confessed when she made it public, urging other pregnant women with persistent headaches to get checked. Months later, in March 2025, she became the first Israeli performer with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A highly visible voice in support of her country and the hostages after the October 2023 attacks, a stance that has brought her praise and criticism in equal measure, Gadot remains the best proof that her career has never followed a predictable script. Who else can claim to have been a pageant queen, a soldier, an immortal Amazon and a survivor, all before turning forty and while raising four girls?
