Biography

Two of his castmates had to pick up his first Emmy for him. On 11 December 2022, at the inaugural Children's and Family Emmy Awards, Kit Connor won Outstanding Lead Performance for 'Heartstopper' and wasn't in the room, so Sebastian Croft and William Gao went up instead. It capped a very strange few months for an eighteen year old who had been quietly working since primary school.

Kit Sebastian Connor was born on 8 March 2004 in Croydon and grew up in Purley, south London. His parents, Richard and Caroline, both work in advertising and had no connection at all to the film business. He started auditioning as a small boy and the jobs kept coming: a sitcom, an episode of 'Casualty', then two series of the CBBC show 'Rocket's Island'.

Growing up on British television

His first lead arrived at ten, in Warner Bros.' Christmas comedy 'Get Santa' (2014), playing a boy who finds Father Christmas hiding in the family garage. Smaller parts followed in prestige company: an unnamed lad in 'Mr. Holmes' opposite Ian McKellen, and young Petya Rostov in the BBC's 2016 'War and Peace'.

On New Year's Day 2018 the BBC ran 'Grandpa's Great Escape', adapted from the David Walliams book, with Connor as Jack, the grandson who breaks his grandfather out of a care home. Tom Courtenay played the old RAF pilot lost to Alzheimer's. Roughly five million people watched it.

The rest of that year was busy too. He was Simon Crowhurst, son of the doomed yachtsman played by Colin Firth, in 'The Mercy'; he turned up in 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society', in the horror comedy 'Slaughterhouse Rulez' alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and briefly in Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One'.

Then came 'Rocketman' (2019), where he played the teenage Reginald Dwight, which is to say Elton John before the name change. He sings "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" with Taron Egerton on the soundtrack. The same year brought 'Little Joe', Jessica Hausner's Cannes competition entry, and the voice of Pantalaimon in 'His Dark Materials', which kept him in a recording booth on and off until 2022. He did all of it while sitting A levels in drama, English literature and history at Whitgift School in South Croydon.

Nick Nelson changes everything

Netflix announced the 'Heartstopper' cast in April 2021. Connor had auditioned to play Charlie and was offered Nick Nelson instead, the rugby lad who falls for the boy sitting next to him in form. Alice Oseman adapted her own graphic novels, Olivia Colman played his mother and Joe Locke played Charlie. It landed in April 2022 and went off like a firework.

Besides the Emmy, the role brought him a Royal Television Society award for leading actor in 2023 and a place on Screen International's Star of Tomorrow list. It also brought a level of scrutiny nobody prepares you for.

He started training in the gym because readers kept pointing out that he didn't look like the broad, rugby playing Nick of the books. "I wouldn't say I was forced into it by fans, but it was me as a young adult coming to terms with the body that I had and feeling I wasn't completely equipped to play the role," he told Vulture.

October 2022

In September 2022 Connor left Twitter, worn down by accusations of queerbaiting: he was playing a bisexual character and had never discussed his own sexuality. On 31 October he came back for one post. "Back for a minute. i'm bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye."

Oseman, Colman and most of the cast defended him publicly, as did the Labour MP Nadia Whittome. A year later he softened the wording in British Vogue: "I think 'forced' isn't the right word I would use, but I would say that I would have preferred to do it another way. I also don't know if I would have ever done it. But at the end of the day, I don't regret it. In many ways, it was really empowering." He made the top twenty of the UK Pride Power List in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Broadway, Ramadi and a goodbye

The work after that went in every direction at once. In 2024 he voiced Brightbill, the orphaned gosling, in Chris Sanders' 'The Wild Robot', with Lupita Nyong'o and Pedro Pascal. That September he made his Broadway debut as Romeo opposite Rachel Zegler, in a Sam Gold production scored by Jack Antonoff.

'Romeo + Juliet' opened on 24 October 2024 at Circle in the Square, closed on 16 February 2025 and became the highest grossing limited run in that theatre's history. Connor took the Theatre World Award for outstanding debut.

'Warfare' (2025) was a harder shift. Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza reconstructed a single morning with a Navy SEAL platoon pinned down in Ramadi in 2006, told more or less in real time. Connor plays Tommy, the new gunner whose eagerness drains out of him as the hours pass. The cast spent three weeks in a military boot camp before a frame was shot, and won best ensemble at the British Independent Film Awards. He shared the screen with Will Poulter, Joseph Quinn, Cosmo Jarvis, Charles Melton and Finn Bennett.

His first horror, 'One of Us', premiered at Manchester Film Festival in March 2026. Four months later, on 17 July, Netflix released 'Heartstopper Forever', the feature that closes Nick and Charlie's story. Wash Westmoreland directed, Anna Maxwell Martin took over from Colman as Nick's mum, and Connor and Locke are credited as executive producers.

He has spent 2026 in London shooting 'Elden Ring', Garland's adaptation of the FromSoftware game for A24, filmed for IMAX and booked for March 2028, with Cailee Spaeny and Ben Whishaw. Waiting behind it are 'A Long Winter' for Andrew Haigh, 'Rapture', a plague horror set in a Yorkshire monastery in 1348 with Poulter and Manu Ríos, and the animated 'Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory' for Netflix, set in present day London with Taika Waititi as the voice of Wonka.

In early August 2026 the American trades reported that Marvel is in talks with him to play Cyclops in the X-Men reboot, which Jake Schreier will direct and where Samara Weaving is already signed as Emma Frost. Nothing is confirmed and cameras aren't expected to roll before 2027.

About his private life there is almost nothing on the record, which appears to be exactly how he wants it. Having been made to explain himself at eighteen, Connor has spent the years since building a career that doesn't require him to explain anything else.
