The 94th edition of the Academy Awards, the Oscars 2022, took place on March 27, 2022, in a live ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, broadcasted by ABC. The gala, which featured three hosts - Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes - will go down in history as the one where actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock in the middle of the broadcast and in front of the whole world.
The reason: Rock had joked minutes earlier about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who had shaved her head due to alopecia. The slap resulted in Smith being banned from attending Academy events for fifteen years and unveiled a series of controversies and marital issues between the couple. Television-wise, it was the most notable moment of a ceremony that lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes of, mostly, boredom. The televised broadcast in the United States attracted 16.62 million viewers.

Cinematically speaking, the big winner of the night was, in a way, the film 'Dune', which won 6 of the 10 awards it was nominated for. However, it did not win Best Picture, which went to 'CODA'. The acting categories also went to other titles, with Will Smith himself winning an Oscar for his work in 'King Richard'.
'CODA' was also the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the award for Best Picture. Jane Campion, winner of the Oscar for Best Director, became the third woman to receive the statuette and the first to have been nominated twice.
