Biography
Debi Mazar got her first taste of show business deciding who was cool enough to get in. At sixteen she was minding the VIP door of the Mudd Club, one of the hippest spots in Manhattan, sharing dance floors with Basquiat and Keith Haring. At Danceteria she met a hungry young singer called Madonna and ended up doing her makeup for her first video, 'Everybody', in 1982. They have been close ever since, and Mazar pops up in the videos for 'Papa Don't Preach', 'True Blue', 'Justify My Love', 'Deeper and Deeper' and 'Music'.
Deborah Anne Mazar was born on 13 August 1964 in Jamaica, Queens. Her parents had their marriage annulled shortly after she arrived and she grew up in rural upstate New York with her mother. Her father, born into a Jewish family in Latvia, kept his roots secret until she was in her twenties. Before the movies came along she sold jewellery at Fiorucci, worked as a dental assistant and made a living as a makeup artist.
Sandy, Spice and the nineties
Martin Scorsese handed her a break most actors would kill for: Sandy in 'Goodfellas' (1990), the mistress who mixes Henry Hill's cocaine in her kitchen. She followed it with Oliver Stone's 'The Doors', Spike Lee's 'Malcolm X' and cult favourites like 'Singles' and 'Empire Records'.
She was the scheming Regina in 'Beethoven's 2nd', popped up in Woody Allen's 'Bullets Over Broadway' and played Spice, one of Two-Face's molls, in 'Batman Forever', sharing scenes with Tommy Lee Jones and Drew Barrymore. The Queens accent never left her, and she has built a whole career on New York women with sharp tongues and sharper nails.
The parts were rarely big, but good directors kept calling. Isabel Coixet gave her 'Things I Never Told You', Michael Mann found her a small role in 'The Insider' with Al Pacino and Russell Crowe, and later came 'The Tuxedo' with Jackie Chan, a blink of a cameo in 'Collateral' and 'Be Cool' with John Travolta and Uma Thurman.
There was also 'The Women', 'Lovelace' with Amanda Seyfried, Peter Bogdanovich's 'She's Funny That Way', 'The Only Living Boy in New York' and a reunion with Woody Allen on 'Wonder Wheel', the Coney Island drama with Kate Winslet.
Shauna Roberts and Maggie Amato
Television is where most people know her from. She led the legal drama 'Civil Wars' (1991) and her wisecracking receptionist Denise Iannello proved popular enough to move with her to 'L.A. Law'. After guest runs on 'Law & Order', 'Ghost Whisperer', 'Castle' and 'Elementary', she became Shauna Roberts, the fearsome publicist of 'Entourage', a part she played across the HBO run from 2004 to 2011 and reprised in the '2015 film'.
From 2015 to 2021 she was Maggie Amato, the Brooklyn artist of 'Younger', seven seasons alongside Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff for Darren Star, the creator of 'Sex and the City'. In between she played a vengeful mob matriarch in 'Happy!' opposite Christopher Meloni, joined Mike Myers' conspiracy comedy 'The Pentaverate' and even had a spin on 'Dancing with the Stars' in 2009.
An American in Tuscany
In the summer of 2001 she visited Florence to see the pianist Katia Labèque, and one of the percussionists at the house was a Tuscan named Gabriele Corcos. On their first night they talked for three hours on the steps of the Santo Spirito church. They married on 16 March 2002, with Ellen Burstyn officiating, and have two daughters, Evelina and Giulia.
The couple's obsession with food became 'Extra Virgin', the Cooking Channel show they hosted together from 2011, plus a Tuscan cookbook in 2014. After two decades split between Los Angeles and Brooklyn, the family settled in Fiesole, Corcos' home town in the hills above Florence, and Mazar holds Italian citizenship. In March 2020 she was one of the first well known names to announce she had tested positive for Covid.
Italy keeps finding her work. Darren Star cast her as a glamorous retro Italian screen star in the Rome finale of 'Emily in Paris'' fourth season, partly because she lived up the road. Spain got there earlier: Paco León spotted her on Instagram and cast her as Ava Gardner in 'Arde Madrid', a black and white Movistar+ series about the star's Madrid years that won three Feroz awards from Spain's film press, and she later did a cameo in his film 'Rainbow'.
Medusa, Magda and a deadly game show
Her recent run may be the busiest of her career. In 'Kaos', Netflix's dark spin on Greek myth from Charlie Covell, the British writer of 'The End of the F***ing World', she played Medusa opposite the Zeus of Jeff Goldblum. In 'Ladies in Black' she took over Magda, the role Julia Ormond played on film, opposite Miranda Otto, and in 2025 came Sky Atlantic's thriller 'The Iris Affair' with Niamh Algar, shot conveniently close to home in Sardinia.
She also joined Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' with Glen Powell as Amoré Americano. And in June 2026 Madonna mentioned her by name in 'Danceteria', a song from her 'Confessions II' project about the nights when neither of them was famous yet. Mazar, naturally, appears in the video. More than four decades on, she's still on the guest list.
