Biography

Ingrid García Jonsson's one big English-language credit so far is a Viking. She played the Norse warrior Brand in 'The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die', the 2023 film that wrapped up 'The Last Kingdom'. It was a small part in a long career, and a strange one to lead with, because almost everything else she has done has been in Spanish.

A Swedish village, a Seville childhood

She was born on 6 September in Bureå, a small place in the Skellefteå municipality of northern Sweden. Her mother is Swedish, her father comes from Córdoba, and the family moved to Seville while she was still small. That's where the three languages come from: Spanish, Swedish and English.

For a while it looked as though she'd end up doing something else entirely. She started an architecture degree and dropped it in the fourth year, waiting tables and shuttling between Seville, Madrid and Argentina while she worked out what she wanted. Her first brush with a big set was about as anonymous as it gets. In 2010 she stood in for Cameron Diaz on 'Knight and Day', part of which shot in Seville and Cádiz. Four years later she was in Cannes.

Cannes, and the part that changed things

In 2014 Jaime Rosales cast her as Natalia in 'Beautiful Youth', about two broke twentysomethings who film an amateur porn video to make a bit of money. It screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and brought her a Goya nomination for Best New Actress, along with nods at the Feroz, Forqué and Gaudí awards and acting prizes at the Lisbon, Marseille and Toulouse festivals.

No two roles alike

What followed is hard to summarise, because it doesn't look like anybody else's CV. There was urban horror in 'Sweet Home' (2015), a turn as Mario Casas's girlfriend Estrella in Kike Maíllo's 'Toro' (2016), and the Spanish Civil War drama 'Gernika' the same year. In 'Rescue Under Fire' (2017) she put on a corporal's uniform for a helicopter rescue in Afghanistan.

The comedies suit her just as well, from 'La pequeña Suiza' (2019) to 'Taxi a Gibraltar' (2019), and she voiced the Spanish dub of 'Smallfoot' (2018). Her best-reviewed lead of that stretch was 'Ana de día' (2018), Andrea Jaurrieta's debut about a woman whose identical double quietly takes over her life.

Then came the musical 'My Heart Goes Boom!' (2020), built around Raffaella Carrà songs; Álex de la Iglesia's tourist nightmare 'Venicephrenia' (2021); and 'Un Amor' (2023), Isabel Coixet's Sara Mesa adaptation opposite Laia Costa. Strangest of the lot is 'A Whale' (2024), where Pablo Hernando made her a near-silent contract killer with an unsettling pull towards water. It premiered at Sitges and most critics agreed she carries it almost single-handed.

Tamara, and what comes next

Her biggest television job so far arrived in July 2025. In the Netflix miniseries 'Superestar', created by Nacho Vigalondo, she plays Tamara, the singer who became a Spanish tabloid phenomenon in the early 2000s. It took hours in the make-up chair and, by her own account, cost her far more mentally than physically. It won her the Spanish Actors' Union award for Best Lead Television Actress in 2026.

Before that she'd done 'Apaches' (2015-2017), 'Instinto' (2019) and 'A Perfect Story' (2023), playing the sister of Anna Castillo's character. She also directs: in 2022 she made the 46-minute documentary 'Nómadas' with Dionisio Naranjo, seventeen short portraits of people who've walked away from conventional working life. Next up is 'Rafaela y su loco mundo', a surreal comedy series arriving in 2026.

Away from work she trains most days, climbs, collects tattoos and makes no secret of being a soft touch with animals. Her younger sister Greta García Jonsson is a dancer, choreographer and circus performer, and in 2021 the two of them hosted the Seville European Film Festival gala together. Not many actors can say they've played a Viking, a supernatural assassin and a real-life pop star inside three years.
