Plot
Amleth is a young Viking prince who is ready to become a grown man. Suddenly, his uncle Fjolnir kills his father, King Aurvandill, and kidnaps his mother, Queen Gudrún. The boy manages to escape and leaves the island in a boat while swearing he will take revenge for what happened. After 20 years, Amleth has become a fanatical berserker warrior or 'ulfhednar' who lives raiding, robbing and looting Slavic villages. However, an old woman half witch half seer will remind him the vow he made two decades ago: to avenge his father and save his mother by murdering his uncle. With that goal clear in his mind, Amleth returns to Iceland on a slave ship and infiltrates his uncle's farm without being discovered, thanks to the help of the slave Olga.
Written (with Sjón Sigurdsson) and directed by Robert Eggers, 'The North Man' tells the story that inspired William Shakespeare's Hamlet. It has a stellar cast, including Alexander Skasgard ('Melancholia', 'Godzilla vs. Kong) in the leading role; Nicole Kidman ('Eyes Wide Shut', 'The Others') as the queen; Claes Bang ('The Square'), as the uncle; Ethan Hawk ('Before Sunrise', 'Boyhood') as the king; Anya Taylor-Joy ('Multiple', 'Last Night in Soho') who returns to work with the director after 'The Witch'; Willem Dafoe ('Spider-Man', 'Grand Budapest Hotel'), who also returns to collaborate with Eggers after 'The lighthouse' or Bjork, who returns to the cinema after her role in 'Dancer in the dark'.
