Biography

On 14 September 2026, Charlie Hunnam will sit in the Peacock Theater waiting to hear whether he has won an Emmy. It's the first nomination of his career, for playing the Wisconsin killer Ed Gein, and it arrives twenty eight years after a production manager spotted a tipsy teenager mucking about in a Newcastle shoe shop on Christmas Eve.

That teenager was buying trainers for his brother. He was seventeen, he'd had a few, and the man who approached him worked on 'Byker Grove'. Hunnam did three episodes of the BBC children's drama and that was that.

He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on 10 April 1980. His parents split when he was small and he was raised largely by his mother Jane, a former ballet dancer who went on to run her own business. The family moved to Melmerby, a Cumbrian village of a few hundred people, when he was twelve. He was expelled from grammar school in Penrith and ended up at art college in Carlisle studying performing arts alongside film theory and history.

Famous at eighteen, and not enjoying it

The real break came in 1999 with 'Queer as Folk', Russell T. Davies's Channel 4 series about gay life in Manchester. Hunnam had just turned eighteen and played Nathan Maloney, a fifteen year old coming out on Canal Street. The show caused a national row, questions in Parliament and a walkout by nervous advertisers, and it made him recognisable overnight.

He moved to Los Angeles soon after and spent several years treading water: Judd Apatow's sitcom 'Undeclared', a couple of small films, and a minor part in Anthony Minghella's 'Cold Mountain' (2003).

Then came 'Green Street' (2005) opposite Elijah Wood, a West Ham firm drama that has never stopped being watched. It also handed him a reputation he'll never shake: his cockney accent turns up on every list of the worst screen accents ever committed, which takes some doing for a lad from Newcastle. He followed it with Alfonso Cuarón's 'Children of Men' (2006).

Seven series on a Harley

In 2008 he got the part that reset everything. 'Sons of Anarchy', Kurt Sutter's drama about a Californian motorcycle club, made him Jax Teller for seven seasons, through to 2014. It brought two Critics' Choice nominations and a following that still stops him in the street to talk about it.

Midway through that run he took the job everyone remembers him not doing. In September 2013 he was announced as Christian Grey in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'. Roughly a month later he pulled out, saying the series schedule made it impossible. Jamie Dornan got the part instead.

Del Toro, the jungle and Guy Ritchie

He has made two films with Guillermo del Toro: the giant robot pilot of 'Pacific Rim' (2013) alongside Idris Elba, and the lovesick doctor of 'Crimson Peak' (2015) with Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston.

The performance from those years that people still bring up is 'The Lost City of Z' (2016), James Gray's film about the explorer Percy Fawcett. Hunnam had come straight off an action shoot and was far too big for it. He says Gray burst into tears at the costume fitting, that he promised to sort it out in ten days, and that he spent the shoot on something like 400 calories a day. Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller and Tom Holland were alongside him.

Next came the expensive failure of 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword' (2017), in which Guy Ritchie had him pulling swords out of stones opposite Jude Law, and a remake of 'Papillon' with Rami Malek.

He did better with 'Triple Frontier' (2019), the Netflix jungle heist with Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac and Pedro Pascal, and with 'The Gentlemen' (2020), where he went back to Ritchie as Matthew McConaughey's fixer, with Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell in the mix.

The years after that were patchier. 'Shantaram', Apple's enormous adaptation shot across India and Australia and badly disrupted by the pandemic, was cancelled in December 2022 after a single season. He then played Kai in 'Rebel Moon' (2023) and its 'sequel' for Zack Snyder, to a decidedly mixed response.

Becoming Ed Gein

In October 2025 Netflix released the third run of 'Monster', Ryan Murphy's anthology, this time about Ed Gein. Hunnam, who is also an executive producer on it, lost a great deal of weight, wore facial prosthetics built to recreate Gein's drooping eyelid, and read thousands of pages of the man's psychiatric records to build the part.

The reviews for the series were brutal. The reviews for him were not. He picked up Golden Globe, SAG and Critics' Choice nominations, and in July 2026 came that first Emmy nod for lead actor. Stephen Graham took the Globe for 'Adolescence'. The Emmy is still open.

Behind the front door

He's guarded about his private life, with one glaring exception. In 1999 he met the actress Katharine Towne at a 'Dawson's Creek' audition, married her in Las Vegas within a few weeks and divorced in 2002. Since 2005 he has been with the jewellery designer Morgana McNelis, and they live well away from the Los Angeles circuit. At the Critics' Choice ceremony in January 2026 he called her his wife, though the pair have never confirmed a wedding.

He has trained in Brazilian jiu jitsu since 2016 under Rigan Machado. Still to come is 'Criminal', the Amazon series he shot with Adria Arjona, adapted from the Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips comics. Not bad for a lad who only got into this because he was messing around in a shoe shop.
